Etymology: < bride n.1 + house n.1With sense 1 compare Old Frisian breidhūs , Old High German brūthūs , and (with the first element in the genitive) Old Icelandic brúðarhús , Old Swedish brudha hus , Old Danish, Danish brudehus , all in the same sense; compare also Middle Low German brūthūs church porch in which weddings are held. With sense 2 compare bridal house n. at bridal adj. Compounds. Apparently re-formed in the 16th cent.
1. A private place occupied by a newly married couple after their wedding; (perhaps) a bridal chamber. Cf. bridal house n. at bridal adj. Compounds. Obsolete.
