Etymology: < bride n.1 + -ly suffix1. Compare Old High German brūtlih (Middle High German brūtlich, early modern German brautlich), Old Swedish brudhliker (Swedish brudlig), both adjectives, and also Old Frisian breidelike, adverb.With Old English rēaf brȳdlic wedding garment (see quot. OE1 at sense 1) compare the compound brȳd-rēaf , in the same sense and in the same source (compare reaf n.). With bridely bed (see quot. 1565 at sense 1) compare earlier bridal bed n. at bridal adj. Compounds and bridebed n. Apparently re-formed in the 16th cent. and again in the 19th cent.; with later uses compare bridal adj. and bride-like adj.
