Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin aeschynomenē , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin aeschynomenē sensitive plant, perhaps a variety of mimosa (adopted as a genus name in scientific Latin ( Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) II. 713)) < ancient Greek αἰσχυνομένη, feminine of αἰσχυνόμενος ashamed, bashful, medio-passive participle of αἰσχύνειν to dishonour ( < αἶσχος shame, disgrace < the same Indo-European base as Old English ǣwisce shame, disgrace, foulness, ǣwisc shameless, indecent, foul, Gothic aiwiski shame) + -ous suffix.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Of a plant: having leaves which move when touched, like the sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica.

1706 Phillips's New World of Words (new ed.) Æschynomenous Plants (among Herbalists) those Plants which as one comes near them with the Hand, shrink in their Leaves, the same with the Sensitive.
1728 E. Chambers Cycl. Æschynomenous Plants, among Botanists, are those popularly called Sensitive Plants.
