Etymology: < Old Icelandic æsir, plural of áss (pagan) god, member of the Aesir (also óss, also as the name of a rune; Icelandic ás), cognate with Old English ōs (pagan) god, name of a rune, Old Saxon ōs name of a rune, and a Gothic form reflected by post-classical Latin ansis (accusative plural) half-god (6th cent. in Jordanes); further etymology uncertain; perhaps ultimately < the same Indo-European base as Avestan ahu-, ahura- lord, master, Sanskrit asura God, Lord, Hittite ḫaššu- king.The same word is probably reflected by Old English ōs-, Old Saxon ōs-, ās-, Old High German ansi-, ans-, Early Runic asu- (probably for *ansu-), Old Icelandic ás- as elements in personal names; compare e.g. the Old English personal name Ōslāc with Old Icelandic Ásleikr and Old High German (in Latinized form) Ansleicus.
