Etymology: < ancient Greek αἰσθητικός aesthetic adj. + -al suffix1, after German ästhetisch aesthetic adj. Compare slightly later aesthetic adj., and the foreign-language adjectives cited at that entry.With the variation in pronunciation, compare discussion at aesthetic n. and adj.
Of or relating to aesthetics; relating to the philosophy or theory of beauty. Also: = aesthetic adj. 2. N.E.D. (1884) notes: ‘Often interchanged in use with aesthetic, but properly distinct; thus my aesthetical notions are the notions I have on the subject of aesthetics; my aesthetic faculties are those which exercise aesthetics.’
