Etymology: < bridge n.1 + head n.1, apparently after French tête de pont (mid 18th cent. or earlier: see tête de pont n.).Compare the following earlier passage, which shows bridge head as a noun phrase denoting the end of a bridge more generally:1610 P. Holland tr. W. Camden Brit. 577 A very proper towne situate upon an hill arising from the river: in the Suburb, as it were, whereof, was sometime Bengeworth Castle at the bridge head [L. ad caput pontis]. With this use, compare head n.1 26b, bridge foot at bridge n.1 Compounds 1, post-classical Latin caput pontis end of a bridge (12th cent.), and also Middle Low German brugghehoved end of a bridge (1375 in an apparently isolated attestation).
