Etymology: In α. forms < bridge n.1 + Old English geweorc work, labour, construction (see work n.). In β. forms partly < the α. forms (with reduction and loss of the prefix of the second element) and partly directly < bridge n.1 + work n. With sense 1a compare bridge-bote n. at bridge n.1 Compounds 4. Compare Middle Low German brüggewerk supplies for the construction of bridges, duty to construct and maintain bridges.
