Etymology: < classical Latin aestīvus of or belonging to summer, occurring in summer, designed for, or used in, summer, appearing or growing in summer, in post-classical Latin also hot (8th cent. in a British source) < aestus heat (see aestuous adj.) + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Spanish estivo (late 13th cent.), Italian estivo (c1334), and also Old Occitan estiu (12th cent.), Catalan estiu (13th cent.), Spanish estivo (c1200 as †estiu ), all nouns in sense ‘summer’. Compare earlier estivous adj.
Now rare.
