Etymology: < aestive adj. + -o- connective + autumnal adj., after Italian estivo-autunnale (1824 or earlier; 1838 or earlier of fevers; 1885 or earlier specifically of malaria).
Medicine. Now chiefly historical.
Designating falciparum malaria, which occurs most commonly in late summer and autumn in temperate regions. Also: of, relating to, or affected with falciparum malaria.
