Etymology: < ancient Greek αἴθων fiery, burning ( < αἴθειν to light up, kindle: see aethionema n.) + -gen comb. form; so called because of the brilliant phosphorescent light that it gave under the blowpipe. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ī·þŏdʒen) /ˈiːθədʒɛn/.

Chemistry. Obsolete.
