aetitesn.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French etite, etites; Latin āetītēs.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman etite (12th or 13th cent.), Anglo-Norman etites (12th or 13th cent.; Middle French, French aétite (1546), French †aetites , attested from a1577 to 1771, French †étite (attested from 1752 to 1842)) and its etymon classical Latin āetītēs (in lapis āetītēs eagle stone (Pliny); in post-classical Latin also without lapis (3rd or 4th cent.)) < Hellenistic Greek ἀετίτης (in ἀετίτης λίθος eagle stone) < ancient Greek ἀετός eagle (see aetosaur n.) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. So called as the stone was said to be found in the eagle's nest. Compare earlier achate n.1 2, and see discussion at that entry. Compare also earlier echites n.
Now chiefly historical.
A hollow nodule or pebble of hydrated iron oxide containing a loose kernel that makes a noise when rattled, formerly regarded as having medicinal and magical properties; the eagle stone; = achate n.1 2, perdicle n. Also aetites stone.
