Etymology: < the male forename Tommy (see Tommy n.1) + noddy n.1 (perhaps as alteration of tammie norie n.), probably with allusion to the bird's distinctive and somewhat comical appearance. Compare Tomnoddy n.The β. forms show alteration after the male forename Tammie, Scots variant of Tommy (see tammie norie n.).
