Etymology: < to prep. + year n. Compare today adv., tomorn adv., and also tomorrow adv., tonight adv.In Old English originally a prepositional phrase with regular inflection of the second element (dative singular gēare). In earlier use often written as two words or with hyphen. (Word division in Old English and Middle English examples frequently reflects editorial choices of modern editors of texts, rather than the practice of the manuscripts.)
