Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish tomatillo.
Etymology: < Spanish tomatillo any of various edible fruits resembling a small tomato (early 18th cent. or earlier), (specifically) the edible fruit of any of various plants of the genus Physalis (second half of the 19th cent.) < tomate tomato n. + -illo , diminutive suffix (compare -illa suffix).
Originally and chiefly U.S.
The edible fruit of any of various plants of the genera Physalis and Lycium (family Solanaceae), resembling a small tomato in a papery husk; spec. that of P. philadelphica and P. ixocarpa, cultivated in Mexico and adjoining regions and typically yellow-green or purple in colour (also called husk tomato). Also: a plant bearing such a fruit.
