Origin: Probably a borrowing from French, combined with English elements. Etymons: French toile , satinette n., sarcenet n.
Etymology: Probably irregularly < French toile linen, cloth (see toil n.2) + -net, -nette (in e.g. satinette n., sarcenet n., in which the n forms part of the base).Perhaps originally a commercial name.
Now historical.

A kind of fine cloth with a silk or cotton warp and a woollen weft used esp. for fancy waistcoats and dresses in the 18th and 19th centuries.
