Etymology: French, = fleece of gold; toison < Latin tonsiōn-em shearing (i.e. of a sheep), or < Latin aurum gold.

b. Heraldry. The figure of this, giving name to an order of knighthood (see fleece n. 1c), and afterwards borne by certain families.
