单词 tobagonian
释义

Tobagoniann.adj.

Brit. /ˌtəʊbəˈɡəʊnɪən/, U.S. /ˌtoʊbəˈɡoʊniən/, Caribbean English /tʊbaˈɡoːnian/, /tʊbʌˈɡoːniʌn/, /tʊbeːˈɡoːnian/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with English elements. Etymons: proper name Tobago , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < Tobago, the name of an island in the Lesser Antilles + -onian (in e.g. Oxonian n., Oregonian n., and other formations in -ian suffix on stems in -on).The European name of the island is attested in Spanish use from the first half of the 16th cent. (e.g. 1519 as Tabaco , 1527 as Tabago ) and in English use from at least the late 16th cent. (e.g. 1577 as Tabaco , a1599 as Tabago , 1613 as Tobago ). The name of the island is apparently related to Spanish tabaco tobacco n., although the exact nature of the relationship is uncertain (compare the discussion at tobacco n.). N.E.D. (1912) gives the pronunciation as (tŏbēigōu·niăn) /təbeɪˈɡəʊnɪən/.
