Etymology: < German Tombazit (A. Breithaupt 1838, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chemie 15 330), irregularly < Tomback tombac n. + -it -ite suffix¹, so called on account of its appearance. N.E.D. (1913) gives the pronunciation as (tǫ·mbăzəit) /ˈtɒmbəzaɪt/.

Mineralogy. Obsolete. rare.

A crystalline mineral having a brownish metallic appearance, containing nickel, arsenic, and some sulphur, and now identified as a variety of gersdorffite (gersdorffite n.).
