Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -ītānus.
Etymology: < classical Latin -ītānus (in e.g. Megalopolītānus Megalopolitan adj.1) < -īta -ite suffix1 + -ānus -an suffix. Compare Italian -itano.Formations within English are found from the 19th cent. or earlier, e.g. necropolitan adj., Gozitan n.
1. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘of or relating to (the place specified by the first element, typically a place with a name ending in -polis comb. form)’, as megalopolitan adj.2, necropolitan adj., technopolitan adj., etc.
2. Forming nouns denoting an inhabitant of the place specified by the first element, as Gozitan n., megalopolitan n.2, etc.
