Etymology: < tocome v. + -ing suffix2. Compare coming adj.It is uncertain whether the 15th- and 16th-cent. uses show continuity with Old English. Compare discussion of uses of the present participle at tocome v. With use in Caxton compare Middle Dutch toecomende (Dutch toekomend ). Compare also Old Frisian tōkumande (West Frisian takommende ), Middle High German zuokomende . Use as noun could alternatively be interpreted as a sense of tocoming n.1 (compare tocome v. 2).
