Etymology: Early modern English: apparently the same as Middle Dutch, Dutch touteren to waver, totter, swing, touter a swing, representing an earlier Old Low German or Old Saxon *taltrôn (compare oud < ald), which exists in a dialect Dutch talteren (Franck), = Old English tealtrian to totter, stagger, be unsteady.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈtolter.
