Etymology: < classical Latin -itat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of -itāre, suffix forming verbs with frequentative or intensive meaning (e.g. palpitāre palpitate v.).Frequent in borrowings from the 16th cent., e.g. premeditate v., debilitate v., agitate v. Formations within English are very rare: compare possibilitate v. (on the model of e.g. classical Latin nōbilitāre nobilitate v.).
