Etymology: < Tamil thōṇi (pronounced dōni): perhaps a foreign word; compare Persian dōnī a yacht. (Spelt donny by the French writer Pyrard de la Val c1610.) N.E.D. (1895) also entered a separate double headword dhoney, doney, with the pronunciation (dōu·ni) /ˈdəʊnɪ/.
