Etymology: apparently < Toxophilus (imaginary proper name invented by Ascham, and hence title of his book (1545), intended to mean ‘lover of the bow’ ( < Greek τόξον bow + ϕίλος lover), for which the regular Greek formation would have been *ϕιλότοξος : see -phile comb. form, philo- comb. form) + -ite suffix1: quasi ‘a follower of Toxophilus’.
