单词 tortolan
释义

Tortolanadj.n.

Brit. /tɔːˈtəʊlən/, U.S. /tɔrˈtoʊlən/, Caribbean English /toː(r)ˈtoːlan/, /toː(r)ˈtoːlʌn/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Tortola , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Tortola, the name of an island in the Lesser Antilles (Leeward Islands, one of the Virgin Islands) + -an suffix. The place name is attested in English from at least the first half of the 18th cent. It has been suggested that it is an alteration of Dutch †ter Tholen , †Tertholen , the name of a former island in the Netherlands (now the Tholen peninsula; itself named after the city of Tholen ), after which the Caribbean island was reportedly named. The name is now often associated (probably by folk etymology) with Spanish tórtola turtle dove (see turtle n.1). In the 17th cent. the island was successively under Spanish, Dutch, and British control, introducing several European languages at an early date.
