Etymology: < breast n. + beater n.In sense 2a apparently after Persian sīna-zan (use as agent noun of the present participle of sīna-zadan to beat the breast); compare the following passage, in which breast-beaters is (inaccurately) used to gloss the related Persian sīna-zanī the action of beating the breast (in a note; the translation of the text itself has ‘while..beating their breasts’):1832 G. A. Herklots in tr. J. Sharîf Qanoon-e-Islam xv. 174 (note) Women who thus beat upon their breasts are called Seena-zunnee (breast-beaters), and are all of the Sheeah persuasion.With sense 2b compare earlier breast-beating n.
