单词 towage
释义

towagen.

Brit. /ˈtəʊɪdʒ/, U.S. /ˈtoʊɪdʒ/
Etymology: Used in 13th cent. in medieval Latin form towāgium , in 13th or 14th centuries in French form touage , implying verbs medieval Latin towāre , French touer . These verbs, however, have not yet been found at that date, and Hatzfeld & Darmesteter consider French touer to be a derivative of Old Norse toga to draw, pull; it might also be from Middle Low German togen : see tow v.1 The English form towage appears in Latin context a1327. In modern use it is felt as a direct derivative of tow v.1
1. The charge or payment for towing a vessel (in quot. 1670, for permission to tow along the bank). Also attributive.
