单词 tosticate
释义

tosticatev.

/ˈtɒstɪkeɪt/
Forms: 1600s–1800s tosticate; English regional 1800s tossicate, 1800s 'tossicate, 1800s tosticaayte (Berkshire), 1800s tostikeyate (Isle of Wight), 1800s tussicate (Herefordshire); Manx English 1800s tossicate.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: intoxicate v.
Etymology: Alteration of intoxicate v., perhaps partly imitative of the temporary speech impairments resulting from excessive consumption of alcohol.
Usually in past participle tosticated, apparently originally a mispronunciation of intoxicated and so used, but later also associated with tossed, tost, and used as = tossed about, distracted, perplexed. Common dialectally; cited in Eng. Dial. Dict. for many counties from West Yorkshire to Somerset.
