Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: town n., taker n.
Etymology: < town n. + taker n., originally (with reference to Demetrius I) after French preneur de villes, lit. ‘taker of towns’ (1647 in the passage translated in quot. 1654) and its model Hellenistic Greek πολιορκητής besieger (see poliorcetic adj.).In quot. 1999 after an epithet of George Washington (and of his great-grandfather John Washington) in an Iroquoian language (probably originally Susquehannock), with the literal sense ‘he bites villages’. In quot. 2001 after Hausa Cīgári, epithet of Ibrahim Dabo, a 19th-cent. emir of Kano, in present-day Nigeria ( < ci to eat, conquer + gári town).
A person who captures towns; a besieger of towns. Chiefly as a personal epithet, esp. of Demetrius I (336–283 b.c.), king of Macedon.
