Etymology: < town n. + -ee suffix2, probably arising by misapprehension of townie n. With use as adjective compare also earlier towny adj.
colloquial (frequently depreciative).
A. n.
1. An inhabitant of a university town as distinguished from a member of the university itself. Cf. townie n. 3, oppidan n. 3a. Now rare.Chiefly with reference to Oxford and Cambridge; cf. town n. 9.
