Etymology: < touch v. + back adv.
American Football.
The action or fact of a team being awarded possession of the ball at a specific point on the field (now usually its own 20-yard line) resulting from the ball being downed by that team, or becoming dead, on or behind its goal line, following a kick or fumble by the opposing team. Cf. safety n. 6b.A player from the team awarded the touchback was originally required to claim the ball and touch it to the ground on or behind the goal line (see quot. 1891).
