Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: tradition n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < tradition n. + -ist suffix. Compare earlier traditioner n. and traditionary n.In sense 1b ultimately translating post-biblical Hebrew rabbānī (see Rabbanite n.). In sense 1c after Arabic sunnī Sunni n. In sense 2b originally translating Arabic hāfiḍ hafiz n. (in al-hāfiḍ al-sharqī, lit. ‘the Eastern hafiz’, title given to the 11th-cent. Muslim scholar and historian Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. T̲ābit b. Aḥmad b. Mahdī al-Šāfiʿī, more commonly known as al-Ḵaṭīb al-Baġdādī ‘the preacher from Baghdad’); in later use in this sense, after Arabic muḥaddiṯ transmitter of Hadith.
