释义 | topsail galen. Nautical. Now chiefly historical. A wind strong enough to allow good progress, but not so strong that the topsails need to be reefed (reef v.1 1a).In common use from the 17th to the early 19th centuries, partly because Defoe (in the passage cited in quot. 1704) includes the term in the middle of his twelve degrees of wind, ranging from stark calm to tempest.
