(a) an area where there is relatively little rail traffic (obsolete rare); (b) a raised or marked area in a road to provide a safe stopping point for crossing pedestrians and to direct the flow of traffic (cf. safety island n. at safety n. Compounds 3, refuge n. 4c).With sense (a), cf. main sense 8a.Sense (b) is uncommon in North America, where safety island is the more usual term.
