Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman transitorie, Middle French transitoire (French transitoire ) temporary (12th cent. in Old French; in early use frequently with reference to life in this world as contrasted with the afterlife), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin transitorius transient, passing (4th cent. in Jerome), relating to traffic (12th cent.; 13th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin transit- , past participial stem of transīre (see transit v.) + -ōrius -ory suffix2.Compare Spanish transitorio (13th cent.), Catalan transitori , Portuguese transitório , Italian transitorio (all 14th cent.). With use in sense B. 1 compare Middle French, French transitoire transitory thing (14th cent. in the source translated in quot. a1500 at sense B. 1).
