Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Transkei.
Etymology: < Transkei (Afrikaans Transkei , Xhosa I-Transkei ), the name of a region of eastern South Africa (see definition) < trans- prefix + Kei, the name of a river of South Africa, which during the second half of the 19th century formed the boundary between the Cape Colony and the territory of the Xhosa people.
attributive. Of or relating to Transkei, a region situated on the east coast of South Africa to the north-east of the River Kei, a traditional territory of Xhosa-speaking peoples; designating this region. Cf. Ciskeian adj.In 1976 Transkei was declared a Xhosa homeland (homeland n. 3) as the Republic of Transkei, the first of several such ethnically based territories to be given limited independence by the National Party government under the apartheid policy of ‘separate development’ (separate development n. at separate adj. 3g). The territory was reincorporated into South Africa in 1994 as part of the Eastern Cape province.
