Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian traversa.
Etymology: < Italian traversa sideways step or movement in fencing (15th cent.), transverse flute (16th cent.; now historical in this sense), specific uses as noun of feminine of traverso transverse (see traverse adj.). With sense 1 compare earlier traverse n. 14a. With sense 2 compare earlier traversière n., flauto traverso n. 1, later traverso n., and also Querflöte n.The modern Italian term for ‘transverse flute‘ is flauto traverso flauto traverso n.
