| 释义 | > as lemmastravertine stone A white or light-coloured concretionary limestone, formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from springs, or from ground or surface water; esp. a hard, dense variety used as a building material. More fully travertine stone.The terms travertine and tufa (cf. tufa n. b) are sometimes used interchangeably; however tufa is generally reserved for porous or spongy varieties of this stone. The harder dense variety is typically formed around the mouth of hot springs, or as stalactites or stalagmites in limestone caves.Travertine is used especially for paving, and as a decorative material for wall claddings and the facades of buildings. It has a particular association with Rome, where it was used to build the Colosseum and St Peter's Basilica.
