Etymology: < scientific Latin Tragelaphus, genus name (see tragelaph n.) + -ine suffix1. Compare scientific Latin Tragelaphinae, subfamily name (1874 or earlier; attributed to E. Blyth), Tragelaphini, tribe name (1953).

Of or relating to a group of bovids of which the genus Tragelaphus is typical, esp. the subfamily Tragelaphinae or (in later use) the tribe Tragelaphini, which comprise chiefly large African antelopes of the genera Tragelaphus (cf. tragelaph n. 2) and Taurotragus (elands).
