Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin tragematopola , -ist suffix; Greek τραγηματοπώλης , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin tragematopola (1583 or earlier) or its etymon Byzantine Greek τραγηματοπώλης seller of sweetmeats (Hesychius; < ancient Greek τραγήματ- , τραγήμα (usually in plural, τραγήματα ) dried fruits or sweetmeats eaten as dessert (see below) + -ο- -o- connective + -πώλης -pole comb. form) + -ist suffix.Ancient Greek τραγήμα is < τραγ- , aorist stem of τρώγειν to eat vegetables or fruit, of unknown origin + -μα (see -oma comb. form). Compare the following later (and apparently isolated) borrowing of post-classical Latin tragematopola:1700 E. Ward Rambling Rakes 3 We..cros'd to the East-side of the Market, to the Remains of a Tragematopola, or, to speak more properly, the Inconditus Grocer, Retailer of Nants.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
