Originally: a small curved or slightly pointed projection of the cartilage of the human ear, extending backwards from the anterior aspect of the ear and partly covering the opening of the ear canal, and sometimes (esp. in older men) bearing a tuft of hairs. In later use also: an equivalent structure in other mammals, esp. bats (in many species of which it is highly developed). Cf. antitragus n.
