Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Transvestismus.
Etymology: < German Transvestismus (1911 or earlier; attributed to Magnus Hirschfeld) < classical Latin trans- trans- prefix + vestīre to clothe (see vest v.) + German -ismus -ism suffix. Compare slightly earlier transvestitism n., and also earlier transvest v.
Originally Psychology. Now somewhat dated, and potentially offensive outside of historical contexts.
1. The action or practice of dressing in clothes conventionally associated with the opposite sex; spec. (Psychology) the condition of deriving sexual pleasure from cross-dressing.
