Etymology: < Latin transfigūrātiōn-em (Pliny), noun of action < transfigūrāre (see transfigurate v.). Compare French transfiguration (13th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter). The specific sense 2 was from its ecclesiastical use the earlier in English.
