Etymology: < Anglo-Norman travaillous, travalious and Middle French travailleux, traveilleux toilsome, laborious, exhausting (late 12th cent. in Old French as travaillos ) < travail travail n.1 + -ous -ous suffix.Compare Spanish trabajoso (13th cent.), Portuguese trabalhoso (14th cent.), Italian travaglioso (16th cent.).
Now rare and chiefly literary.
Characterized by or involving great effort, exertion, pain, or discomfort; laborious, exhausting; arduous, difficult. Cf. travailsome adj.
