Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin tropaeus , -an suffix; Greek τροπαῖος , -an suffix.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin tropaeus (of a wind) that turns round, changing (Pliny), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek τροπαῖος of turning or change, of or for defeat (see trophy n.) + -an suffix.With Tropaean wind (see quot. 1686) compare ancient Greek τροπαία an alternating wind, especially one that blows back from sea to land, use as noun (short for πνοὴ τροπαία turning wind) of feminine of τροπαῖος.
Obsolete. rare.
