单词 tropaeolum
释义

tropaeolumn.

Brit. /trə(ʊ)ˈpiːələm/, U.S. /troʊˈpiələm/
Inflections: Plural tropaeola, tropaeolums.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Tropaeolum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Tropaeolum ( Linnaeus Genera plantarum (1737) 114) < classical Latin tropaeum trophy (see tropaeum n.) + -olum -olum suffix. Apparently so called from a resemblance of the leaf to a shield and of the flower to a helmet.
In form Tropaeolum: a genus of Central and South American herbaceous plants (family Tropaeolaceae), mostly of trailing or climbing habit and having irregular spurred flowers, typically red, deep orange or yellow in colour; (also tropaeolum) any member of this genus, esp. any of those grown as ornamental plants. The ornamental members of the genus, esp. the widely cultivated T. majus, are commonly called nasturtium (see nasturtium n. 2).Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 345.
