triple alliance n. an alliance of three states, powers, or organizations, spec. (usually with capital initials) (a) that of England, Sweden, and the Netherlands in 1668; (b) that of France, Great Britain, and the Netherlands in 1717; (c) that of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy in 1882; (d) that of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain, the National Union of Railwaymen, and the National Transport Workers' Federation in 1914.The Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy lasted until the outbreak of the First World War war in 1914; cf.
