Etymology: < true adj. + -ness suffix. Compare earlier untrueness n.Compare Old English (rare) getrēownes faith, faithfulness ( < i-treowe adj. + -ness suffix). In sense 3 perhaps an independent formation < truce n. (compare α. forms at that entry), or perhaps arising by association with that word.
1. With possessive adjective: a person in whom or thing in which confidence is placed; an object or source of trust; = trust n. 1b. Obsolete.Only in Old English.
