Etymology: < ancient Greek τρόπις keel < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the base of τρέπειν to turn (see trope n.) + -ις -id suffix2.In plural form tropides after the Greek plural form.
Zoology.
1. The straight middle section (keel) of a C-shaped sponge spicule, joining the curved and pointed ends (prorae). Obsolete. rare.
