Etymology: modern Latin, < Greek τρισμός = τριγμός a scream, also a grinding, rasping.
Pathology.
Tetanus or tonic spasm of the muscles of the neck and lower jaw, causing the jaw to close rigidly; lock-jaw. (Rarely extended to tetanus in general.)
